Responding to industry requests on relevant issues, version 2.0 favors international collaboration, extended industries, and one entirely new Function. Review the updates \u2013 and their implications for your business \u2013 before they go live.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) is on the cusp of releasing the second version of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/cyberframework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cybersecurity Standards<\/a>, and they\u2019re looking to stay relevant. To keep pace with the current threat landscape, they\u2019ve taken industry suggestions and incorporated them into what will be a draft by this summer and a final version by 2024. It\u2019s not more of the same; the CSF 2.0 will broaden its focus, increase accountability, and look to become \u2013 like everything else \u2013 more global for the years ahead.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the changes?<\/h2>\n<p>The original NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) is a set of guidelines developed to mitigate organizational security risks and includes best practices to identify and protect assets, detect and respond to threats, and recover from incidents.<\/p>\n<p>This new version, once crafted, will consider the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2023\/01\/19\/CSF_2.0_Concept_Paper_01-18-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">following changes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expanded guidance on how to implement it<\/li>\n<li>An emphasis on governance<\/li>\n<li>An emphasis on supply chain risk management<\/li>\n<li>Increased understanding of measurement and assessment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, version 2.0 notably expands the reach of the framework beyond critical national infrastructure (CNI) to small businesses and institutions of higher learning. It also names \u201cinternational collaboration and engagement\u201d as an \u2018important theme\u2019 for this newest update.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do they matter?<\/h2>\n<p>In an effort to stay abreast of the current security challenges, NIST issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/csrc.nist.gov\/News\/2022\/rfi-evaluating-and-improving-nist-cyber-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">request for information<\/a> last February. Specifically, they were \u201cseeking information about the use, adequacy, and timeliness of the CSF \u2013 and the degree to which other NIST resources (e.g., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/privacy-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Privacy Framework<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/csrc.nist.gov\/projects\/risk-management\/about-rmf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Risk Management Framework<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/csrc.nist.gov\/projects\/ssdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Secure Software Development Framework<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/itl\/applied-cybersecurity\/nice\/nice-framework-resource-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NICE Workforce Framework<\/a>) are used in conjunction with, or instead of, the CSF.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What they got was a lot of positive feedback surrounding the trusted-and-true framework and some relevant updates for the years ahead. \u201cThe CSF has been adopted voluntarily and in governmental policies and mandates at all levels around the world, reflecting its enduring and flexible nature to transcend risks, sectors, technologies, and national borders,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2023\/01\/19\/CSF_2.0_Concept_Paper_01-18-23.pdf\">paper<\/a> reads. To that end, and to continue its usefulness in those arenas, \u201cThe \u2018Cybersecurity Framework 2.0\u2019 version reflects the evolving cybersecurity landscape \u2014 but community needs will drive the extent and content of the changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These changes matter because NIST is responsible for creating the cybersecurity standards and practices in use by the US federal government and, as they state, voluntarily in use by organizations around the world. Many vendor security products are built to comply with NIST frameworks, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpcwire.com\/2022\/08\/03\/not-just-cash-for-chips-the-new-chips-and-science-act-boosts-nsf-doe-nist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">billions of dollars<\/a> of federal funding go into ensuring their research, reliability and relevance is the best in the industry. Outdated NIST policies mean much of the world\u2019s security will be out-of-date.<\/p>\n<h2>How do they impact you?<\/h2>\n<p>Looking ahead, one of the most significant changes is the addition of the new \u2018Governance\u2019 Function. Adding on to the original \u201cidentify, protect, detect, respond, recover\u201d is now \u201cgovern,\u201d and the implications are large.<\/p>\n<p>This \u2018new crosscutting Function\u2019 will not only highlight how important governance is to reducing risk but may also include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Determining priorities and risk tolerances<\/li>\n<li>Assessing risks and impacts<\/li>\n<li>Establishing policies and procedures<\/li>\n<li>Understanding cybersecurity roles and responsibilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This plays largely into the compliance and auditing side and reinforces its value as an increasingly important security pillar in the years ahead. As new data privacy laws pop up, staying safe means being able to foster innovation without stepping outside of the legal lines.
